The 75th Anniversary of the Red High-Speed Train: 2122 August
Saturday 9.30 a.m. 6 p.m. and Sunday 9.30 a.m. 5 p.m.
Admission: Children: DKK 40; adults: DKK 80; families (maximum of 2 adults + 3 children): DKK 200.
The 75th anniversary of one of Danish history’s greatest traffic-related breakthroughs was celebrated on 14 May 2010. This is because 14 May 1935 was the date on which both the Little Belt Bridge opened and Danish Rail started to use its new trains, popularly called the “Red High-Speed Trains”. The duration of a trip between the various parts of Denmark was significantly reduced from that day on and the comfort of the trip took a huge leap forward, as travellers could now keep their seats on the same train for the entire trip from Copenhagen to Aarhus, for instance. As the same red high-speed train unit was used throughout the trip, passengers no longer had to rush to get a good seat when changing modes of transport for crossing the Great Belt and the Little Belt.
The high-speed train anniversary will be the theme of a big event held by the Danish Railway Museum at the weekend of 2122 August.
Stars of the show:
The MS 401 red high-speed train
Naturally the star of the show is the object of the festivities, namely the Danish Railway Museum’s red high-speed train unit from 1935. The multiple unit is the only type remaining which was in use from the very beginning and was in operation up to 1973. The unit is made up of three cars: the motor coaches MS 401 and MS 402, in addition to the AA 431 trailer car, all three of which were jointly built by the factories Frichs and Scandia. Further details
The multiple unit has just been sweepingly refurbished, but is unfortunately still awaiting approval for transporting passengers. During the event, it will be possible to inspect the train at your leisure and it will be presented at shows.
Der Fliegende Hamburger and SVT 137.225
Many people think that the idea and design of Denmark’s red high-speed trains were based on a prototype of German motor-coach train from the 1930s, often called the Flying Hamburger. Thanks to the great kindness of the German Railway Museum (Deutsche Bahn Museum) in Nuremberg, we have actually succeeded in borrowing a train set, based on this, which is usually exhibited in Leipzig. The multiple unit was built in 1935 and was originally deployed on the BerlinHamburg line. After the war, it served as a saloon car for high-ranking DDR officials. Further details
The multiple unit will be transported from Leipzig, Germany, to Padborg, Denmark, by another authentic museum locomotive (E 18 047), an electric locomotive delivered to Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1939/40. The vintage German locomotive is expected to come all the way to the event in Odense. Further details
The Silver Arrow MA 460, TEE/VT 11.5
Starting in 1963, the high-speed trains from 1935 was replaced by advanced, new German-built trains. The original German version was named VT11.5 and these trains were deployed in the fast and comfortable Trans-Europe Express (TEE). The primary colour of the unique Danish version was also red, but in 198384 it was repainted in silver and subsequently renamed the “Silver Arrow”. The Danish Railway Museum’s Silver Arrow is the only Danish version of the train still in existence Further details
Its previous appearance at the museum was a few years ago, but it is now returning having just been equipped with new windows. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to take a ride on the Silver Arrow on runs to Tommerup in West Funen.
A complete list of the participating locomotives and train units can be seen below.
